Five C&S projects receive 2014 ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards

C&S Companies is proud to announce that five of firm’s projects were honored with top awards by the American Council of Engineering Companies, New York Chapter in their annual Engineering Excellence competition, including a Diamond Award—the highest award given at the state level.

ACEC_SUNY-Cobleskill ACEC_Special-Metals-FurnaceACEC_SYRACEC_Academic-IIACEC_Pineville-BridgeDiamond Award—SUNY Cobleskill Comprehensive Site Utility Assessment. C&S conducted a campus-wide site utility assessment for the 336-acre campus to locate, document, and maintain a database of existing campus utilities. We assessed each underground utility asset, mapped it in 3D, and integrated it with an aerial photogrammetric survey of the entire campus. A condition assessment report for each utility included immediate, 5-, 10-, and 20-year replacement recommendations.

Platinum Award—Special Metals VAR Furnaces Installation. To stay at the top of industry standards, Special Metals Corporation installed three new vacuum arc remelting (VAR) furnaces to produce high-purity aerospace metals. C&S performed all structural, electrical, and mechanical engineering for the design of all the structures, support equipment, maintenance mezzanines, and electric power. 3D design ensured that all pieces were constructed to fit almost perfectly, eliminating any field modification. This project was built under an accelerated construction schedule inside an operating factory facility without disrupting production.

Gold Award—Syracuse Hancock International Airport Passenger Terminal Security and Access Improvements. C&S was the architect, engineer, and construction manager for a $60 million, 147,000-square-foot, two-story terminal expansion and renovation designed for LEED Silver. A new, second-level centralized passenger screening checkpoint includes a dramatic panoramic curved curtain wall with views onto the active airfield.

Gold Award—Onondaga Community College Academic II Building. The new two-story, 45,000-square-foot Academic II building features a 200-foot clear span across Furnace Brook Gorge and includes eight smart classrooms, 34 individual music practice spaces, two keyboard labs, and two 500-square-foot percussion practice rooms.

Silver Award—Pineville Bridge (CR48) Over the Salmon River. C&S designed a new 230-foot, steel multi-girder bridge to replace a 96-year-old, single-lane bridge over one of the world’s finest salmon fishing locations. Elements such as brown powder coated guide rail, weathering steel girders, and a stone form liner finish help the bridge blend into the surrounding area.
