Binghamton University University Union Rehabilitation
C&S teamed with Binghamton University to rehabilitate, repair, and upgrade the existing University Union (UU) south facility. The south building was originally built in
1966 and is approximately 110,000 square feet on three floors (ground, main, and second). The UU south facility connects to the UU north facility, which is currently undergoing a similar renovation. The south building houses the following spaces for student and faculty use:
-
Bowling alley, billiards room, and ping-pong room
-
Coffee house/night club
-
Student organization meeting spaces
-
Six 1,500-square-foot high technology education rooms
-
Assorted student lounges and small conference rooms
-
Student retail shops and bicycle repair
-
SODEXHO offices
-
Three large conference and entertainment rooms used for conferences, job fairs, faculty receptions, performances, and graduation ceremonies. This is the premier location on campus for alumni, student, and faculty entertaining and events.
C&S designed a complete removal and rehabilitation of all the building systems, including HVAC/mechanical, lighting, power, telecommunications, security, sprinkler, fire alarm, and plumbing. C&S also provided structural design services. Architecture was performed by university personnel. The exterior shell of the building remained intact; however, a roofing and asbestos abatement project immediately preceded the MEP system removal and rehabilitation. The entire project was designed with full 3D/BIM CAD software that produced a full trade-to-trade coordination model during the design. This model was shared by both the university architects and C&S engineers. The model was the basis for all of the construction documents and was used by the installing contractor to produce coordination drawings.
C&S provided the following construction phase services: submittal and shop drawing review, attending project construction meetings, bi-weekly construction inspection, and special construction inspections.
