Onondaga Community College Academic II Building

AcademicII_1 AcademicII_2C&S provided project management, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life safety, security, AV/communications, site/civil, and construction management for the new Academic II building at Onondaga Community College. The project is certified LEED Gold.

The new building is two stories, 45,000 square feet, and features a dramatic 200-foot clear span across Furnace Brook Gorge. By building across the gorge, the facility links Gordon Student Center to the east with Ferrante Hall to the west. Academic II includes 8 smart classrooms—approximately 800 square feet each—34 individual practice spaces dedicated to music instruction, two keyboard labs, and two 500-square-foot percussion practice rooms. On the southern exposure of the building, three spaces are double height, approximately 28 feet, with open views to the gorge. A 1,200-square-foot percussion rehearsal room and 2,400-square-foot instrument/choral rehearsal room are sized for large student ensembles. A 150-seat, 3,100-square-foot recital hall provides a grand space for student and outside professional performances for the public.

The project was designed in 3D using Revit 2011 BIM software. Revit models were exchanged multiple times between all consultants and across all disciplines. This helped to ensure a fully coordinated design that optimized space usage across all trades.

This project received a 2014 Gold Engineering Excellence Award from ACEC New York.
