SUNY Canton Dormitory Roofing and Exterior Rehabilitation

C&S designed a new roofing system for two 3-story dormitory buildings at SUNY Canton—the Smith and Mohawk dormitory buildings. After this successful project C&S was hired to design a similar system for the Heritage and Rushton dormitories. These four dormitories were uniquely constructed with multiple mansard roofs extending from the flat roof to the grade on each elevation. A shortened construction season and limited access to the Heritage and Rushton dormitories required the flat roof replacement and mansard replacement to be phased for two construction seasons. C&S was able to redesign the interception of the roofing systems to phase this work. The campus and C&S’s architects spent a considerable amount of time locating an aesthetically pleasing, durable shingle system for these prominent building features.

The project required the removal of the existing flat roofs down to the concrete structure and the installation of new tapered rigid insulation and a solar reflective, white EPDM roof membrane (including new blocking, copings and flashings, and roof drains inserts). Our design also included the replacement of the existing cement asbestos shingles on the mansard roofs with an aesthetically pleasing, impact-resistant polymeric shingle and installing additional rigid board insulation. The polymeric shingle was a four color blend to complement the stone walls used prominently around the campus. The design included the exterior stucco wall repair and the painting of all stucco surfaces of the dormitory buildings.
