Syracuse Hancock International Airport Terminal Expansion and Renovation

SYR1 SYR2 SYR3C&S was the architect and engineer for a 147,000-square-foot, $63 million terminal renovation, security, and access improvement project at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport. The most visible public feature of this project is a new second-level centralized screening point for all passengers. The new space includes a dramatic panoramic curved curtain wall with views onto the active airfield and seating for passengers. The airport previously had two separate TSA screening points in the north and south concourses that each had two screening positions. These screening security checkpoints were inadequate for handling peak hour passenger loads. The new central screening area includes ten positions with room for future expansion. Additional floor space allows for increased waiting spaces and viewing areas. Expanded space was built for future retail and food services.

On the first floor, the TSA baggage screening process was relocated behind the ticket counters in new building additions in the north and south airline baggage makeup areas. The additions accommodate equipment required for a full in-line baggage screening system in each wing. C&S designed a new emergency operations center (EOC) on the second level of the terminal area that can connect to both pre- and post-security areas. The EOC provides a larger and more well equipped space for performing FEMA and DHS-required community preparation responses to disasters and crises. The EOC is fully equipped and houses check-in areas, meeting and conference rooms, a large town hall area, an operations room, a communications room, and utility spaces.

A minimum rating of LEED Silver is being sought on this project, making it one of the first LEED airport terminal projects in New York. To reduce the overall impact of the building on the environment and minimize energy usage, conservation measures such as premium efficient motors, energy recovery HVAC systems, low-flow lavatory fixtures, rainwater harvesting, and recycled building materials are incorporated. Prior to construction, the entire existing structure was fully modeled using building information modeling (BIM) software.
