Eastern Municipal Water District Reservoir Site Design

In 2003, Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) finalized the water demand study for the Sun City area that took into account the current water demand as well as the projected water demand for the next 10 years. Based on the water demand study, EMWD confirmed that additional water storage for the Sun City area was needed.

The Tally Road tank facility was identified as a possible addition to the existing water reservoirs within the 1080 pressure zone. As a result, EMWD acquired a 5-acre site located on the east side of Tally Road and after geotechnical and environmental studies were completed, EMWD selected C&S to provide engineering services, including site improvements for the reservoir site.

C&S prepared grading plans and site improvement plans that included storm drain piping, concrete curbing, and asphalt pavement as well as 18-inch diameter supply piping. As part of the grading design, more than 70,000 cubic yards of material was removed from the site. In an effort to contain the reservoir’s water during a catastrophic seismic event, the steel reservoir is set into a “bowl” approximately 9 feet deep. This design concept has been used by EMWD whenever site topography will allow. Another benefit by this design concept is that the reservoir is hidden by the general public and is less obtrusive to the aesthetics of the surrounding area.
