QuieterSchool-Maryvale Primary School

Maryvale Primary School is a one-story brick veneered building on a 22.7-acre site. The building was originally constructed in 1958 with two classroom wings, with a third classroom wing added in 1962. The 85,386-square-foot school serves pre-K through second grade.

C&S designed and oversaw the construction of a combined sound attenuation and capital improvement project. This included renovation of classrooms, library, auditorium, gymnasium, art room, and offices. As part of the sound attenuation project, classrooms were fitted with high performance acoustical windows and doors. The window wall system for the classrooms also included new acoustically rated emergency egress doors. New casework and countertops were installed in all the classrooms. The library received new shelving, tables, and circulation desk. Acoustical ceilings were installed throughout the school.

Classrooms and corridors were equipped with high-efficient surface mounted, T-5 fluorescent lamps. The cafeteria, auditorium, art room, and library were equipped with high-efficient, recessed T-5 lamps.

The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning upgrades featured the addition of a new 223-ton air cooled screw chiller. This chiller will provide chilled water to the new vertical unit ventilators installed in each classroom and also to the new air handling units serving the auditorium, gymnasium, multi-purpose room, art room, and library. The vertical unit ventilators and air handling units provide cooling, ventilation, and heating and provide a controlled thermal atmosphere for the students while also meeting the interior noise requirements.

The capital improvement portion of the project concentrated on the renovation of the library, including new furniture and flooring. The administration office spaces are also being renovated. Interior classroom hallway doors and exterior hallway entrance doors will be replaced.

The entire school’s fire protection system was upgraded to a fully addressable alarm system. The public address and clock system were also upgraded as part of this project. The school was equipped with a new closed circuit TV security system and additional access control devices. The front parking lot was also reconfigured for additional parking and student crossing access.
