C&S Wins ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards

April 2009

C&S Companies are proud to announce that the firm received two Engineering Excellence Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies, New York Chapter.

Cayuga–Onondaga BOCES Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES

C&S received a gold award for work on the new Cayuga–Onondaga BOCES in Auburn. C&S served as the agency construction manager for LEED coordination and commissioning authority on the new $42 million, 200,917-square-foot, state-of-the-art, regional education center.

The state-of-the-art facility consists of 7 discrete areas: the central core wing that includes the kitchen, cafeteria, gymnasium, four large multi–purpose meeting rooms, and classroom space, the day treatment wing, the central services wing, which houses the building HVAC systems, a two story daycare–administrative office wing, two classroom wings, and the building trades and auto technologies wing. The new facility has the capacity for additional student referrals into existing programs and the opportunity to use space in a variety of ways to accommodate future program needs.

As the LEED program coordinator and liaison to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), C&S coordinated all LEED accreditation efforts of the architectural and engineering design teams in concert with the facility owners and directors. C&S was responsible for coordinating the LEED process, assembly of the back–up and proof documentation for each LEED credit, and submitting an approvable application to the USGBC. The facility is expected to receive LEED gold certification.

As the construction manager, C&S was responsible for both preconstruction and construction phases. C&S developed a conceptual CPM schedule and prepared a detailed construction estimate. C&S also developed the general requirements of the specifications, aided the owner and architect in coordination of the integrated design process, and performed a third–party review of the completed plans.

Oswego Riverbank StabilizationOswego Riverbank Stabilization

C&S  received a silver award for the design, construction administration, and inspection of the Oswego Riverbank Stabilization project. The embankment supporting West First Street adjacent to the Oswego River dated back to the early 1800s and was showing evidence of active erosion. The concrete bases of some posts were almost completely exposed due to the loss of embankment material and there was curb settlement and roadway pavement cracking.

The new 367-foot-long structure, with a maximum height of 15 feet, blends seamlessly with the adjacent Varick Dam, the downstream Brookfield Hydropower Plant, and the native rock at the site. Landscaping, a new sidewalk, protective railing, and security fencing provide a safe venue for walking and enjoying the river view. Previously there was no sidewalk or accessible location for observing the fishermen, boats, and other sights from this location. Other project improvements included pavement reconstruction and site drainage. This project will also contribute to the character and accessibility of Oswego once it is linked to the existing Westside Linear Park and the proposed Harbor Trail system, which is currently being developed to showcase the city’s historical, maritime, recreational and scenic assets.
