C&S Wins Award for Detroit Metro Pavement Project
C&S along with the Wayne County Airport Authority (owner and operator of Detroit Metro Airport), DMJM Aviation, and Ajax Paving Industries received the Award of Excellence under the Airports Category at this year’s Asphalt Pavement Association of Michigan-MDOT Asphalt Paving Awards program for its work on the Detroit Metro Airport rehabilitation of Runway 3L/21R project. This was the highest award for any airport in Michigan project.
The Runway 3L/21R rehabilitation was a $7 million portion of the larger $65 million reconstruction of Runway 9L/27R and associated taxiways project. The Runway 3L/21R rehabilitation design included a 3-inch mill and 8-inch overlay of the existing 200-foot-wide runway, which was a composite pavement section of asphalt and Portland cement concrete (PCC). Pavement repairs were also performed on the existing PCC pavement after milling. C&S designed the demolition, runway grading, utilities, runway status lights, navigational aids, soil erosion controls and several other pieces to this project. The design of Runway 3L/21R was added to the project by the client in the middle of the design for the rest of the project. This required a lot of extra effort from the design team to design a product that could be bid in the short timeframe.
