Design
C&S provides all airport engineering design services, including topographical surveys; geotechnical investigation; preparation of plans, specifications, and design reports; advertising and review of bids; and recommendation of bid award. We have completed almost 1,000 separate airport design projects, including runways, taxiways, and aprons; lighting and navaids; obstruction removal; grading and drainage; buildings and structures; and fuel facilities.
Airfield Pavements
C&S has successfully completed hundreds of airfield pavement projects. These projects have included construction of new and rehabilitation of existing bituminous and portland cement concrete runways, taxiways, and aircraft parking aprons. C&S has designed numerous airfield pavement projects at general aviation, air carrier, and military airfields. In fact, we have completed airfield pavement projects at virtually every airport we have served.
Installation of ILS
C&S can design the installation of an instrument landing system (ILS) to increase the level of safety and ultimately help in facilitating the overall growth of an airport.
Airfield Lighting, Signage, Navigational Aids, Weather Systems
C&S has performed design and inspection services on all types of airfield lighting and navigational systems, including edge lighting, centerline and touchdown zone lighting, visual aids (such as REILS and PAPI), complete instrument landing systems (ILS), and approach lighting systems. In addition, we have completed design and inspection services of automated weather observation stations (AWOS) at numerous airport facilities. These projects included all related electrical power distribution, controls, equipment installations, and stand-alone airfield electrical buildings. In addition, C&S has completed emergency power systems for airports, including stand-by generators and transfer equipment.
Safety Area Improvements
The FAA is emphasizing improving runway safety areas and C&S has experience on multiple safety area-related projects. The effort begins with an inventory of existing conditions to determine the deficiencies in the existing RSA. After runway operations are analyzed and a list of all aircraft types operating at the airport is compiled, alternatives are developed to improve an RSA to meet the design standards. These alternatives could include grading and removal of all objects, shifting the runway in either direction, changing the orientation of the runway, operational changes using declared distances, or installation of an engineered material arresting system (EMAS).
Automobile Parking and Access Roads
Transportation services provided by C&S also include highway and bridge planning, design, construction administration and inspection. Our Highway/Bridge Group has more than 30 professionals who are experienced with airport access and service roads as well as state and local highways, roadways, and bridges.
