Sustainability Planning

C&S works with communities, regions, campuses, airports, and other entities to develop sustainability plans that help guide smart decisions for development and investment. We believe that the best way to ensure that environmentally responsible decisions get made is to integrate sustainability plans into other development plans so that they work together instead of creating confusion.

The foundation of a sustainability plan is defining what “sustainability” means to the owner and important stakeholders. In order to establish realistic, attainable, and measurable goals for sustainability, all parties must be on the same page from day one. The most common definitions of sustainability include the Brundtland Commission definition of “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” and ACI-NA’s Airport Sustainability definition of “A holistic approach of the Economic viability, Operational efficiency, Natural resource conservation and Social responsibility (EONS) of the airport.” C&S’s approach begins with an initial meeting or charette that focuses on your vision for sustainability, overall goals, and the mission statement that will serve as the basis for the plan.

The goals of sustainability planning are to achieve specific environmental, social, economic, and operational benefits, including:

  • Facilitating federal, state, and local approval/permitting process
  • Protecting natural resources
  • Improving relationships with community and agencies
  • Enhancing the benefit to the community
  • Reducing the cost of development and/or operating and maintenance costs

Our approach to sustainability planning is based on a number of key elements:

  • Defining sustainability, identifying goals, and crafting a mission statement
  • Conducting baseline assessments
  • Establishing performance targets and monitoring programs
  • Performing a gap analysis to determine what steps are necessary to achieve goals
  • Implementation plan
  • Public and stakeholder engagement
