Insights: C&S’s Growing Aviation Sustainability Team Celebrates a Decade of Industry Leadership
Recent Award Winning Project
C&S is pleased to announce that the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) was recently awarded the Envision rating system’s Platinum award for the Runway 5R-23L and Taxiway D Strengthening and Capacity Enhancement project—the first airfield project to ever receive this accolade. Awarded by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI), the Platinum achievement is the highest honor, earned only through an intense commitment to the program’s framework of leadership, quality of life, resource allocation, natural world, and climate and resilience. C&S led the sustainability integration effort for the Runway 5R-23L and Taxiway D project, incorporating “industry-firsts” like carbon sequestering concrete and other innovative strategies.
A Pioneer in Aviation Sustainability

The platinum award is just the most recent evolution of our long-standing practice. C&S has been at the forefront of aviation sustainability, helping airports define what this means for them and the industry. In 2012, C&S developed the first FAA-approved sustainable airport master plan, which inspired the FAA’s sustainability planning pilot program.
Since that time, C&S’s aviation sustainability practice has continued to grow and evolve with the industry. C&S has pioneered a holistic approach to sustainability factoring in economic and operational elements to ensure sustainability programs endure within the unique constraints of airports.
Today, our work encompasses three primary areas: sustainability planning, design & construction, and decarbonization.
C&S keeps our airport clients at the cutting edge of sustainability, including the following emerging trends:
- ESG reporting
- Alternative fuels for vehicles and aircraft
- Electrification
- Reducing embodied carbon of construction materials
- Improving the way airports engage with their communities to build mutually beneficial relationships with their neighbors
