Conventus Center Site Remediation
The Conventus Center For Collaborative Medicine is a 350,000-square-foot, $110 million facility at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. C&S completed a remedial investigation, design and oversight of the remediation of the former gas station site. The project received a 2016 Platinum Engineering Excellence Award from ACEC–New York. As part of the NYSDEC Brownfield Cleanup Program, C&S designed a complex remedial program that took six months. Soil contamination extended from 10 to 40 feet below grade. The site was excavated to 26 feet to remove residual contamination and enable equipment staging and material handling areas to support the deeper excavation area. Saturated running sands destabilized the deep excavation and required development of an innovative method of deep excavation in “cells” to control the excavation integrity. As a result, 30 percent of the below grade soil conditions were stabilized with flowable fill to allow construction of the parking garage and building. This technique was the most important factor in the project’s success, helping exceed the remediation goals, generating additional tax credits.
