IHP Psychiatry Laboratory Renovation
C&S provided full architectural and engineering design services for the renovation of the third floor psychiatry lab, Institute for Human Performance at SUNY Upstate Medical University. The 2,500-square-foot research laboratory is adjacent to 1,100-square-foot of office space for research staff. The design included the addition of a 4°C cold room, an ADA compliant dark room, two tissue culture rooms, and open lab space.
The architectural scope of the project focused on functional space planning and upgrading finishes meeting the needs of the new research team. Based on information obtained directly from the lead researcher, laboratory configurations were developed to optimize efficiency and maximize flexibility utilizing both new and reused lab casework.
The mechanical engineering scope included evaluation of existing systems and design of new system to serve the added cold room. A new condensing unit was provided for the cold room as well as a new exhaust system for the tissue culture rooms and dark room.
The plumbing scope included designing new service to the biosafety cabinets located in the tissue culture rooms and new water, vent, and acid waste piping for the dark room.
The electrical scope included new hardwired connections to specialty equipment, safelight fixtures for the dark room, and emergency and stand by power as required.
