Envision Award-Detroit Metro Runway Rehabilitation
C&S was part of a large design team for the $84 million complete rehabilitation of Runway 4L-22R and associated taxiways. We led the integration of sustainability, facilitating a charrette at the onset of design to identify opportunities. We applied the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s Envision guidance and pursued an award. The project received the Envision Silver award, becoming only the second airfield project to be certified. A number of initiatives reduced resource consumption, including LED lighting and signage, stormwater re-use for dust control (10,000,000+ gallons of recycled water), and re-use of excavated materials both on the project and in locations west of the runway to balance the site and minimize maintenance needs. The contractor used an on-site concrete crusher for efficient pulverizing of materials for use on other projects. Existing impervious surfaces at the site were reduced, decreasing stormwater runoff and associated water quality impacts. This also minimizes future maintenance costs and the need for virgin materials.
