River Road Replacement
C&S performed design phases I-VI for the $1.2 million replacement of River Road (CR 96) over the NYS&W Railway. This locally administered, federal-aid project replaced a 100-foot, 3-span steel multi-girder bridge with a geosynthetic reinforced soil integrated bridge system (GRS-IBS). The new structure uses geosynthetic reinforced soil system abutments and u-wingwalls with an adjacent pre-stressed precast concrete box beam superstructure with a concrete deck and integral wearing surface. A single slope concrete barrier with pedestrian fencing provides protection over the railroad. An alternatives analysis determined that the GRS-IBS cost was comparable to major rehabilitation. The new bridge has no deck joints or bearings, reducing maintenance. The gravel, precast concrete block, and geogrid materials abutments required no concrete pours, reducing construction by more than a month. The design included survey and mapping, in-depth bridge inspection, alternatives analysis, SEQRA and NEPA , railroad agreements, hazardous waste and asbestos screening, public meeting, design approval document, preliminary design, final plans, and construction oversight.
