Project

Replace Pavers and Site Work

In Fall 2022, Binghamton University initiated a comprehensive effort to rehabilitate and upgrade several key plaza areas at the core of its campus. Partnering with the State University Construction Fund (SUCF), C&S was selected to provide engineering and landscape architecture services aimed at addressing critical deficiencies—particularly related to accessibility along a major campus thoroughfare.

The existing pavers and plaza surfaces exhibited widespread deterioration, including shifting and settling, which created unsafe and non-compliant conditions. These deficiencies posed substantial challenges for individuals requiring accessible pathways and presented trip hazards for the broader campus community.

This $4.8 million dollar project included new storm sewer drainage, site lighting, and repairs to the parking garage. C&S mobilized in Spring 2023 to commence design services and address the concerns identified by both SUCF and the university. The design team undertook an extensive programming and conceptual development process, carefully evaluating site constraints, user needs, and long-term maintenance considerations. Through this effort, detailed renderings and visualizations were produced to illustrate the proposed improvements and anticipated end state.

Substantial completion was achieved in Fall 2025 for the Phase I plaza design. The project successfully fulfilled Binghamton University’s vision, delivering enhanced ADA accessibility, revitalized campus aesthetics, and demonstrating a high level of collaboration throughout all phases of design and construction.
